New travel aler
Japanese authorities say the death toll from Friday’s earthquake and tsunami has risen above 3,000, while at least 15,000 people are still missing. As the country deals with these disasters and potential nuclear fallout, another quake hit Shizuoka prefecture at around 9:30 p.m., Taiwan time. This quake had a magnitude of 6.0 and occurred at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers.

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry has raised its travel alert level to red for Japan’s Kanto region, which includes Tokyo. It’s the ministry’s highest warning level and advises against any travel to the area. Red alerts had already been issued for Honshu’s northeast and Hokkaido’s eastern and southern regions.

The turmoil that often comes in the wake of disasters seems noticeably absent in Japan. To find out why, FTV reporter Susan Liao looked at a Taiwan blog entry posted on the day of Japan’s earthquake and that has since gone viral. The blog gives credit to Japan’s official broadcaster, and local experts compared its coverage to that of Taiwanese media.

A Taiwanese blogger attributed Japan’s calm reaction to the disasters it’s facing to its official broadcaster, NHK.

The blogger advocates NHK’s coverage style, saying it, quote: [[CG1]] “Immediately showed sober footage, taken from the air, that gave the public accurate, detailed info on the tsunami.”

Even though other stations may have flashier graphics, media experts agree that NHK delivers calm coverage that provides a large amount of useful information.

Media is meant to bring society forward. Of course you could stimulate your audience by providing them with something like an amphetamine, but do we want to rise or degenerate?

Taiwan’s media still have a lot of room to improve, especially when they report disaster news about people’s safety. There’s no gray area.

Flashier footage may attract audiences, but when the main goal of a story is to spark attention, many important elements may be neglected.

Following the explosions and fire, officials have detected hazardous levels of radiation at the Fukushima power plant. The leaks are making conditions dangerous for people living in the plant’s vicinity, and the hazards could spread as far as North America if a full meltdown occurs.

The radiation at Fukushima is being measured using sieverts. One sievert is equal to 1,000 millisieverts, and the lowest level at which increases in cancer are clearly evident is around 100 millisieverts per year. After Fukushima power plant’s explosion Tuesday, radiation levels near Reactors 3 and 4 were extremely high.

NHK Anchor
At 10:22, the radiation detectors measured 30 millisieverts per hour between Reactors 2 and 3. Near Reactor 3 it measured 400 millisieverts, and 100 millisieverts near Reactor 4. These measurements are definitely different than they were before because these levels would have an impact on people.

Also, a continental air mass heading south is bringing with it a large amount of moisture. Japanese authorities are warning Fukushima residents to not go outdoors because radioactive particles can dissolve in rain, making it very hazardous.

CNN Weather Forecaster
This is the system that is continuing to sort of stay offshore, but it is already beginning to bring with it those cold northerly winds. And then this next area of pressure this is coming in, and the winds at this point will be a lot colder, and also stronger, and there’s a lot more moisture in this system.

U.S. government nuclear experts warn that if there is a complete meltdown of any of the reactors’ cores, large amounts of radiation would infiltrate the ground, air and water. Radiation could even reach the atmosphere and spread over the Pacific, Canada and the western United States.
