The rocky Nasca Desert in southern Peru holds one of mankind's greatest mysteries.

Visitors take airplane rides over the plateau to view huge designs carved into the desert.

The outlines of people and animals are giant, some begin 200 meters across. What story do these lines have to tell？

祕魯南部充滿岩石的納斯卡沙漠藏有人類最偉大的秘密之一

遊客搭飛機橫越這座高原以求觀賞刻在沙漠中的巨大圖樣

Mystery has long surrounded the Nasca Lines, with some theories about their creation bordering on science fiction.

For example, there are people who believe that these geoglyphs were made by aliens.

Their reasoning is that the complete shapes can only be seen from the air, and since they were made before airplans,

aliens must be the creators.

Scientists have discovered that the designs can easily be appreciated from the surrounding hills, though.

No aircraft are needed.

Most scholars believe thar a civilization known as the Nasca were the designers.

These people lived in the area between 100 BC and 700 AD.

They were skilled farmers who engineered irrigation systems in order to grow crops in the dry desert.

Over 800 yesrs, the Nasca farmed the land, built huge temples,

and used basic surveying techniques to make these incredible geoglyphs.
