Hurricane Ivan, blamed for the deaths of at least 50 people in the Caribbean, became a rare, top-intensity Category 5 hurricane with catastrophic winds of 165 mph (270 kph) as it blasted past Jamaica and headed toward the Cayman Islands, Cuba and possibly Florida.
